The former Argentinian international won the prestigious honors on Thursday as an acknowledgment of his hard work and exceptional performance during this historical season for the Herons. His 16 league goals in 2022 propelled Inter Miami to the playoffs for the first time in their short but eventful history. But more important than that, his remarkable leadership on and off the pitch made him the perfect recipient for the prestigious award ahead of the likes of Jeremy Ebobisse from the San Jose Earthquakes and Kei Kamara from the Montreal Impact
The MLS Comeback Player of 2022 also marked the last personal honor for the Heron Star as he announced his retirement just a few days before the end of the season. Recognition from his peers, the media, and the league will mean a great deal to Higuain. Throughout his time in the Sunshine State he fought tooth and nails to give Inter Miami relevance on the global stage. And for that, we Herons, will always be grateful to Pipita.
I certainly hope he still has space in his trophy cabinet for this one last accolade. After a glittering 17-year-long senior career Higuain has amassed an impressive haul of personal honors, medals, and trophies. He won domestic cups and league titles everywhere he’s played, including Spain, Italy, and England. It’s unfortunate he didn’t get a chance to bring a trophy to South Florida but guiding the Herons to a playoff place and winning the MLS Comeback Player of the Year is not a bad way to finish his career
